Trending Now: Opposites are attractive in beauty

SEPT 20, 2017

Beauty influencers and makeup artists alike are turning things around – literally. It is the best time to try the opposite of what you’re used to, switch up the focus, and experiment with the upside down. These are the top three looks to love right now.

In the Negative Space Cat Eye

Getting creative with the cut crease has been on our radar for a while now – but it’s popularity has now been solidified by its presence at this month’s New York Fashion Week. For the Monse SS18 show, makeup artist Grace Lee dabbled in double lines and negative-space wings depend on the model’s face shape. There’s something about its simplicity that makes it so effective.

Reverse Wing Liner Rules

This trend takes a look that’s traditionally safe (who leaves the house these days without a little winged eyeliner?) and transforms it into a slightly disconcerting, yet delightfully creative statement. And it’s simple, too – all it takes is applying the flick upwards from the inner corner of your eye. Make like @dahliacreates (‘Just tell me what to do and I’ll do the opposite’) and get everyone doing a double take.

Only Lower Lashes Allowed

The 180-degree eye flips are so in fashion, they also apply to your lashes. A cool twist on that sixties style made famous by Twiggy, forget falsies on top and instead apply them only to the lower lash line. See @stormdunder for how to do it super natural and @artistryby.ljt for a more fantastical twist on the trend.

Perfect Asymmetry Lip Art

Whoever said you had to be exact with your lipstick was wrong – at least, that seems to be what MUA Collie Lipart (@tobeyoutiful_com) is saying with her artful interpretation on asymmetrical design. Revelist did a round-up of their faves, but the standout, if we’re talking opposites attract, is no doubt her Out of the Rainbow look: smudging your lipstick has never looked this good.
