August 23, 2018:
With summer in its last leg and fall right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to revamp what’s in your shower. For most of us (even the most skincare obsessed), in-shower routines are often overlooked, but they’re actually key to maintaining healthy hair and skin. We’ve created a basic guide of everything we’re loving from head to toe (literally) to amp up your shower/bath-game.
Baths are really in a category on thereon, which is why we’re tackling them first. Baths are a total hit-or-miss and you either love em or hate em. Either way, they’re a great way to unwind and relax at all times of the year. While bubbles are fun (and make for great Instagram Stories), look for products that provide bubble-action as well as beneficial properties for your skin. For those of us with dry skin, baths are the perfect time to soak the skin in moisturizing and soothing ingredients. Herbivore’s Coconut Soak not only smells good enough to eat (and technically is food-grade, although we don’t suggest trying it), but it also delivers a boost of hydration with an array of all-natural ingredients. For nighttime baths, go for something with a relaxing smell (like chamomile or lavender) to calm down the senses. The Dr. Teal’s Soothe and Sleep Foaming Bath delivers on the bubble-front but is also dual-acting in the TLC department. And lastly, if your skin is irritated (think sunburns) or just simply sensitive, oatmeal is the ingredient to look out for. The Fizz & Bubble Bath Bomb works wonders to deliver silky smooth skin using a variety of skin-softening oils such as almond, grapeseed, and jojoba.
If you’re not a bath lover, have no fear. Showers can easily be spruced up, too. Oils are your friend whether it comes to taking care of your body wash and lotion needs. Mustela’s Body Oil does all of the aforementioned (and is also great for getting a super close and smooth shave) and is formulated with sensitive skin in mind. If you’re looking for a slightly richer formula, L’Occitane makes the perfect cleansing and softening oil, which transforms into a milk when you lather (bonus points if you love anything almond scented.)
Exfoliation should also have its place in your body upkeep routine, especially as we transition from summer to fall. Exfoliating isn’t only for fake tanners (although an important step if you want a streak-free application), but also if you struggle with flakey, dull, or dry skin. Having an exfoliating mist on hand makes the whole process a breeze (we like Sephora’s Finisher Mitt), layered with a gentle exfoliator you can use multiple times a week. Some of our favorites in this category are ULTA’s Brightening Vitamin C Scrub, which is perfect for days your skin is looking a little dull and tired and hydrating Soap & Glory’s Smoothie Scrub. For a little stronger of an exfoliate (not for daily use), LUSH’s Ocean Salt (which actually looks like salt crystals)) gets the job done without being too abrasive.
