How To Get Started on WordPress Without Going Crazy

DEC. 20, 2016:

In 2016, starting a blog literally takes 15 minutes, especially with easy-to-use, intuitive programs like WordPress. If you have been hesitating to create a brand new blog, or perhaps want a companion to your YouTube page, do not wait any longer. Your easy, peasy WordPress Quick-guide is here.

To start, go to and set up a username and password. From there, you can pick a web address, unless you already have one, and a plan. Basic WordPress plans are free, but the Premium and Business accounts can be as much as $299. If you want to start with the free version and update later, you can. It is that simple. Once you have your username and plan in place, you can set up a profile and create the title of your blog.

Once you get set up, the best thing to do is just fool around a little bit to get comfortable with WordPress. The Dashboard is where you’ll spend most of your time—it’s the backbone of your blog, where you can customize it, store images, edit pages and post. The menus on the left side of the dashboard are your control panel, so feel free to take some time to figure out what they do.

Get the look
Here is the fun part. Now that you have the bones, you get to give your site a makeover. WordPress has over 350 available themes to choose from, and they’re all available to customize. In your dashboard, go to My Sites>Themes and then preview the theme by clicking Try & Customize. If you want that theme, click Activate.

Make it yours
The level at which you choose to customize your blog is completely up to you. You can create a custom banner to include at the top of the site, or you can add special widgets like your Twitter or Instagram feeds. You can also include custom fonts and colors just for you.

Once you have personalized your blog, it’s time to start writing and posting. You can create new pages and sections to your blog, and you can even create a menu to separate your blog into categories. For example, if your blog is about travel, you could make a menu with different topics like Packing Tips, Favorite Destinations or City Guides.

Get connected
WordPress boasts a super engaged community of bloggers. Use tags and keywords to find other content that is relevant to you, and start the conversation to grow your following. Don’t forget to promote your blog on social media for maximum results.
