Get Glued To Instagram’s Craft Beauty Trend

May 24, 2017

As glue-based beauty trends are sparking a new wave of creativity on Instagram, we look back at some of our recent favorites – from the passing fads to the ones sure to stick around.

‘Terrarium Eyes’ by Ellie Costello @makeupisart_x

The UK-based, 19-year-old MAC Cosmetics MUA hit headlines around the world this month for her unique eye looks incorporating flowers, leaves, and other plants. Her first, Enchanted Forest, posted in March, she explains was ‘inspired by the flowers growing in my garden.’ Marie Claire says Costello has teased a live tutorial due to come out soon.

‘Succulent Nails’ by Roz Borg @arozona

Following Costello’s floral look is this botanical-inspired beauty trend: ‘I had been making real succulent jewelry and wanted to use the same application on something I had never seen baby succulents used on before,’ Australian artist Borg told The Huffington Post. She created the look by gluing tiny plants to an acrylic nail using Oasis floral adhesive, and then attaching to her real nail once dry.

‘Pom-Pom Party’ by Marly @punchingpictures

This Netherlands-based MUA’s Instagram account is ‘for the lovers of bright colors, interesting textures and [of] course makeup’. Her experimental eye fuses traditional beauty tools with props you are more likely to find at the arts and crafts store, but it was last year’s pom-pom look that sparked a series of copycats – at least, according to Allure.

‘Glitter Girls’ at Giamba by Val Garland @thevalgarland

The legendary MUA and now global make-up director for L’Oreal Paris is behind many a viral look, from ‘Snogged Lip’ to ‘Boy Brow’, with her signature unconventional takes on beauty trends. Giamba’s SS17 show was no exception: Garland applied specs of silver glitter in holographic designs, like circles and triangles on foreheads, and along the ear cuffs.

‘Techno Butterfly’ at Dior by Pat McGrath @patmcgrathreal

For the label’s spring/summer 2013 show, attention was drawn to the eyes using ‘intense geometric colors, studded with “bursts” of Swarovski crystal in matching or contrasting shades,’ McGrath, the MUA known for her artistic prowess, explained to Vogue. The crystals were applied in a row, glued over a line traced along the lashes, with some scattered across the lids.

‘Jewel Lips’ at Fendi by Peter Philips @peterphilipsmakeup

The Italian label’s spring/summer 2017 show was one of the most talked-about catwalk offerings this year, with a playful beauty look inspired by a Manga cartoon and custom-made pink glitter. MUA Phillips explained to Allure: Line the lips with beige pencil, then coat with Ben Nye Glitter Glue, before ‘you smoosh the glitter on, clean up the edges with clear tape, and finish by pressing a tissue over the mouth.’
