FEB. 08, 2017:
Do you have a mentor? If so, consider yourself lucky. Mentors can help us transform our careers and reach our full potential, both personally and professionally. In our two-part series on mentors, we’ll discuss the benefits of mentors and how to find the right mentor for you. Keep reading to learn more about the mentor/mentee relationship and how it can help you in your entrepreneurial endeavors.
One of the unique things a mentor can provide is their network of industry contacts. Even if they aren’t directly in the same industry as you, they may be able to push you into the right direction, introduce you to someone or get your foot in the door somewhere. In all industries, no matter how creative, it is all about who you know, and mentors can extend your network beyond your wildest dreams.

If you have a new, crazy idea that just might work, a mentor is the perfect person to run it by. They provide a safe, confidential ear to test new ideas before you implement them, and can even provide insight into how to make your ideas even better. Mentors can also provide perspective during difficult times of transition.

If your mentor is in the same industry as you, they can teach you business skills, appropriate behaviors and protocols. For example, imagine how much easier cold-emailing a brand would be if you had a mentor to coach you though it or send you a sample email.
We all need a little boost now and then, don’t we? Mentors can teach you how to prioritize yourself and your brand, trust your gut and take control of your career. Validation is so important in the creative industries, and mentors can give you that pat on the back you need to push yourself to the next level.
Many people think that mentorship is all about them. Wrong. Mentorships are about the relationship between the mentor and the mentee. Collaborating with your mentor, having informed conversations about your industry and learning to accept criticism are the building blocks of successful mentor/mentee relationships and should not be taken for granted.
Do you have a mentor? What are the benefits you receive from them? If you don’t have a mentor, tune in next week—we’ll discuss how to find (and keep) the perfect mentor.
